If you’re anything like me, your feed is full of Beyoncé’s new country track. And I’m as grateful for a new Bey drop as he next person, but it got me thinking… Beyoncé isn’t the first person to do country and she won’t be the last.
So many bands and artists have dipped their toe into the genre. The anecdotal lyrics, guitar structure and necessity for cowboy boots is a magnet that most musicians can’t resist.

Primal Scream, with their ever evolving sound, released Country Girl in 2006. The perfect country song. And now, nearly 20 years later, it’s sang in the pub with as much jubilation as Neil Diamond’s Forever in Blue Jeans. It’s a pub favourite, it’s a banger and it is my song for the week.
As soon as that distinctive country chord sequence starts you’re tapping your foot, with your imaginary shaker in hand, moving to every beat. Before you know it you’re sporting a level of Glaswegian attitude, even Bobby Gillespie himself would be quaking in his cowboy boots.
Primal Scream take country and make it even cooler. That Scottish swagger, the rock energy, there’s no wonder as soon as I think country I scroll past Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers and dive straight in with this utter tune.
This weekend, let’s blast Country Girl so loud even the neighbours are line dancing across the living room with the gusto of an 8-year-old dancing to cotton eye joe.
