I was first introduced to The Kites last year when they supported Balancing Act. To say I was blown away is putting it mildly. They are the most exciting band I’ve seen live for a very long time, so when I heard they were releasing new music I knew I needed to write about it.
This young Yorkshire band have just released ‘Hello’… from the second the song starts with the quick paced riff and cheeky little ‘hello’, I’m left grinning from ear to ear. This is exactly what I expect from The Kites, pure angst and exhiliration.
Joe’s vocal cuts through and the reverb adds an early 1975s vibe, but with all the youthful energy the band possess.
It’s an instant banger.
“Hello, do you think of me when you’re alone? Oh what a teenage thing to think about” The perfect line to sing into your hairbrush.
As soon as the chorus drops I can guarantee this song is going to be in your head all day. Maintaining their live energy with Ollie’s dynamic drumming and Élodie’s bass lines Hello takes The Kites up to a whole other level. And yes, if you read the write up from Balancing Act’s gig I maintain that Élodie is unreasonably cool. I want to be her.
The guitar lines throughout are an indie pop dream but that solo… Jake shreds in a way that made me morph into Mr Schneebly from school of rock. It’s a face melter.
Hello is one of those rare song that will resonate with most people, it could sit on BBC Radio 1, 6 Music, Introducing and then also be completely at home on the Radio X playlist. It’s a certified banger and has to be our Song for The Week.
The Kites are certainly ones to watch and I can’t wait to see them live again this year. The band will playing a headline gig on 19th April at Brudenell Social Club in Leeds, the tickets are only a tenner… so there’s no excuses to miss this one! It’s going to fun to see how Hello translates live… but if my prior experience is anything to go by, I’ll be stood with smiling like the cheshire cat.
So go on… give it a play and when you’re converted… I guess I’ll see you in Leeds?
