On this rainy Wednesday morning I know I need a song that instantly brings a smile to my face, so it has to be Girls And Boys In Love.
From the second it starts I feel that great song fizz through my veins, and despite the grey skies outside, my head is filled with bright blue horizons. Because for me, a good way to waylay the almost inevitable seasonal depression of Autumn, is a song with a sunny energy.
What’s sunnier than love. The song manages to bottle that excitement you get at the start of a relationship, when you really, really fancy someone and just being near them makes you beam and bubble like a lava lamp. Suddenly, I feel like the giddy schoolgirls in Angus, Thongs and Perfect Snogging, from which many people found this song. Giggling about those you fancy, finding a boy obsession worthy based solely on the fact he can play more than 6 chords on the guitar and knows who The Kinks are. Feeling everything with the hefty weight puberty brings, I feel it all for the duration of this song.
With the layering of guitar and piano matched with the occasional harmony, the song may be about letting someone go but it’s full of the optimism that can only can only be summarised by Hugh Grant in Love Actually “Because love, actually, is all around us”.
So, for 2 minutes 33 seconds, blast The Rumble Strips at full volume and watch the clouds move away and the sun come out while you have a little boogie. Think about your person or that one you fancy (can be Timothée Chalamet, no judgement here) and feel your body fill with love, joy and optimism.
It might be bleak outside, but that doesn’t mean your music choice has to match that.
the cutest song I forgot about! Thanks for putting it back on my radar!
